Speaker Of The House Named In Texas

(Austin, TX) -- Representatives in the Texas House have selected Dustin Burrows of Lubbock as the next House Speaker. Three representatives were originally nominated, two Republicans and a Democrat. But after the first ballot didn't produce a winner, the top two candidates had a runoff. That's when Burrows defeated fellow Republican David Cook of Mansfield, getting 85 votes to Cook's 55. Nine representatives chose not to vote. Governor Greg Abbott had publicly supported Cook for the position, and Cook had earlier won a Republican caucus vote. But Burrows was able to garner support from Democrats and enough Republicans to secure the win. Former Speaker Dade Phelan, of Beaumont, did not seek another term for speaker.
