With Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, of Beaumont, dropping out of the race to remain speaker, State Representative Dustin Burrows, of Lubbock, says he has enough votes to become the state house speaker, but some of his supporters appear to be backing another candidate.Burrows made the announcement late Saturday, but quickly ran into problems when one of his presumed backers requested his name be removed from the list of his supporters. This comes as Representative David Cook, of Mansfield, remains the preferred choice of the Republican caucus. Both appear to be short of the 76-member majority required to win the speakership. The House won't vote for speaker until it reconvenes next month.
